Materiali sostenibili

The group works on research projects and carries out teaching activity and scientific dissemination related to low environmental impact materials and technology for sustainable architecture and in particular wood in the building sector.

RESEARCH PROJECTS 

Among the most recent project of the research group: Territory and industry analysis regarding the national and regional (Liguria) wood supply chain, called “Preparatory actions for the implementation of the integrated educational projects”, B.E.S.T. – Bosco: Energia e Sviluppo per il Territorio project – European Social Fund (ESF), the International Cooperative Project “Brasil Proximo”, a cooperation project supporting the economic development of the Upper Solimões-Amazonas region, and the University Research “Feasibility of green building solutions to public housing: analysis and cost optimization solutions for building envelope”. In addition, thanks to a PhD research, potentialities, critical aspects and research opportunities for the use of wood for the sustainable development in the Italian building sector were investigated.

Group members authored several monographs and journal papers regarding building design using sustainable materials, the use of wood in the building sector, low-tech architecture, and ecodesign.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES AND SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION

Professors and researchers of the group carry out teaching activities on the use of sustainable materials and of wood in university courses, in Italy and abroad. They are also teacher in several post-graduation courses. Results of research works have been presented in national and international conferences.

The project concerned an analysis of the regional wood sector and the current status of enterprises and an educational programme with different professional training courses and a course in Wood Technologist (postgraduate course, 1000 hours), organised by University of Genova – DSA.

Liguria Region, Leader partener, DSA Department sub contractor. Title of the research: “Guidelines for the application of timber construction systems and sustainable technologies in the Tropical climate zone (Brazil), with relation to the local building construction”. The project is focused on the implementation of supply chains based on the regional natural resources and biodiversity (Upper Solimões-Amazonas), according to sustainable principles. Scientific Supervisor: Carlo Vannicola.
  • 2012 – SCORE European Project, “Sustainable Construction in Rural and fragile areas for energy Efficiency”, subsidised within the 2007-2013 MED European Programme. scoremed.eu. The European project SCORE was developed by the Province of Savona, with DSA and DIST, Departments of University of Genoa, and it involves Partners from 10 areas of seven different countries: Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Portugal, Spain, France, Cyprus. Supervisor for DSA: Andrea Giachetta; with: Adriano Magliocco, Fausto Novi, Katia Perini, Chiara Piccardo. SCORE supports the implementation of sustainable energy policies in the construction sector in fragile coastal and rural areas with exceptional landscape values, exploiting eco-innovative potential, using traditional building elements combined with innovative green technologies.
  • 2010-2013 – Doctoral research “Use of timber in the Italian building sector. Critical issues, potentialities and research guidelines for a sustainable development” (pp. 304), Polytechnic School – University of Genoa, Department DSA. PhD: Chiara Piccardo; promoter: Adriano Magliocco. The research analysed the environmental, technological and socio-economic aspects of timber constructions in Italy and their recent advancement, defining some potential research lines to enhance the use of timber in building construction in Italy and according to principles of environmental sustainability.
  • 2008 University Research 2008 “Feasibility of green building solutions to public housing: analysis and cost optimization solutions for building envelope”. Scientific Supervisor: Adriano Magliocco; with: Rossana Raiteri and Chiara Piccardo. The research regards the use of sustainable materials for the building envelope. It develops a simplified comparative systems to evaluate the environmental compatibility of construction materials and identifies some sustainable solutions for walls, floors and roofs, evaluating their environmental impact degrees and comparing their costs.

  • 2010-2011 _ Definition of design elements for sustainability and of criteria for environmental compatibility for the PUO in the Variation Bergamo Settlement in Celle Ligure and Varazze (SV) – touristic/residential settlement (Giachetta).
